Description
Last month: History is full of "what if" questions lunged upon the outcome of singular, isolated incidents. Knowing that Confederate commissioners were aboard the British mail packet ship RMS Trent, Captain Wilkes of the Union navy gungoat San Jacinto forcibly boarded the neutral ship and look custody of the Confederates. This occurred on November 8, 1861 and this little-known incident on the high seas had the potential of widening the American Civil War into a truly global conflict. Meantime news of the boarding did not reach England until three weeks later when the Trent landed in Southampton on November 27. On the streets news of the Trent sparked outrage. Americans living in London feared for their personal safety. If such a thing as a public poll had existed in 1861, 99.9 per cent of the British population would have voted to go to war with the United States.
